The British Secretary of State for Energy has granted development consent for the Hornsea Project Two offshore wind project, developed by Danish energy group DONG Energy off the Yorkshire coast. DONG Energy will now review the details of the Development Consent Order (DCO).
Hornsea Project Two will consist of up to 300 turbines for a total capacity of up to 1.8 GW, enough to supply power to 1.6 million average British households.
DONG Energy is developing the 1.2 GW Hornsea Project One offshore wind project, which was granted a Final Investment Decision Enabling contract (Contract for Difference, CfD) by the British Government in April 2014; the wind park, consisting of 174 turbines rated 7 MW each, is expected to be fully commissioned in 2020. DONG Energy is the sole owner of the project (66.66% stake acquired in February 2015) and acquired additional development rights for Hornsea Projects Two and Three in August 2015.
Hornsea will be the final stage towards DONG Energy delivering on its strategic target of installing 6.5 GW of offshore wind by 2020.
