The Netherlands and the United Kingdom (UK) plan to build a cross-border power transmission link connected to offshore wind parks and able to transfer a capacity of 1.8 GW. The power transmission system operators (TSOs) TenneT and National grid will collaborate to develop the interconnection project, named “LionLink”, which will be able to transfer power to the United Kingdom from wind parks located off the Dutch coast, as well as electricity produced in the UK to the Netherlands.
The project, which is expected to provide enough power for 1.8 million UK homes, is scheduled for completion by the early 2030s. This multipurpose cross-border transmission line will be the second of its kind, with the first one (capable of transferring 400 MW) having been built between Germany and Denmark.
