UHH wins rights to develop two hydropower projects in Australia

The Australian local water system operator WaterNSW has awarded to Upper Hunter Hydro (UHH) the rights to explore the development of two large pumped-storage hydropower projects capable of storing more than 1 GW for 8 to 12 hours in the Hunter Valley region (New South Wales) in Australia. The competitive tender process awarded the Australian company UHH access to areas of WaterNSW land and reservoirs at Glenbawn and Glennies Creek dams to conduct the necessary research to develop the proposal through the feasibility and planning stages. UHH is expected to secure all necessary approvals and consent for their projects during this initial phase to eventually construct and operate the projects.

The AEMO estimates the need of a seven-fold increase in large-scale wind and solar generation by 2050, with a necessity to add almost four times the firming capacity from dispatchable storage, hydro and gas-powered generation by 2050 (74 GW).
