The UAE’s updated NDC targets a 40% GHG emissions reduction target by 2030

The United Arab Emirates has released a third updated to its second Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement, in which the country raises its pledge to cut its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to 40% by 2030 (compared to a business-as-usual scenario), up from the 31% announced in its previous updated second NDC.

Under its BAU scenario, the UAE's GHG emissions should increase from 225 MtCO2eq in 2019 to 301 MtCO2eq in 2030. This third update aims to cut GHG emissions to 182 MtCO2eq in 2030 (from 208 MtCO2eq in the previous NDC update). This marks an emissions reduction of 19% compared to the 2019 base year level. The updated NDC also reiterates the UAE’s ambition to reach net zero emissions by 2050 and sets specific emissions reduction targets for domestic sectors such as power and water generation, heavy industry, transport, waste, buildings, and agriculture.

In addition, the UAE announced plans to produce 1.4 Mt/year of hydrogen by 2031, 1 Mt of which will be green hydrogen while the remaining 0.4 Mt will blue hydrogen.

The UAE will host the COP28 in November and December 2023.
