The UAE's updated NDC increases its emission reduction target to 31% by 2030

The Government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has approved an updated version of the UAE’s second Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement, which increases the country’s 2030 climate target of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from 23.5% to 31% of a business-as-usual scenario for the year 2030. The previous target was set in December 2020.

This new target is expected to bring the UAE’s total emissions to 207.8MtCO2eq in 2030, a decrease of 31% (93.2 MtCO2eq) compared to the business-as-usual scenario that forecasted 301MtCO2eq of emissions in 2030. Under the previous commitment, the UAE had set a target of 240 MtCO2eq in 2030.

The UAE’s updated second NDC breaks down the GHG emission reduction target by sector. The electricity sector is projected to be the highest contributor to the target at 66.4%, followed by the industrial sector at 16.6%, transport at 9.7%, carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) at 5.3%, and waste at 2.1%. The country, which targets net-zero by 2050, will host the COP28 in 2023.
