The United Arab Emirates’ Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) has announced a strategic partnership with the Uzbek Government to explore strategic opportunities in Uzbekistan’s power sector. These opportunities involve new and existing power plants as well as associated power infrastructure, and notably plans to develop a new greenfield combined cycle gas-fired (CCGT) power plant in the country with a capacity of 1.5 GW.
The proposed CCGT project will be developed next to the existing Talimarjan power complex (southern Uzbekistan) where TAQA has already announced plans to invest in the privatisation of two gas-fired plants. The new partnership is expected to cover the design, financing, engineering, procurement, commissioning, testing, ownership and operation of the power plant by TAQA.
The agreements signed between TAQA and the Uzbek Government are also considering opportunities to invest in existing and additional greenfield gas-fired power generation plants with a combined capacity of more than 3 GW, along with power transmission and distribution infrastructure in Uzbekistan.
Earlier in May 2023, the Uzbek Government also signed agreements with the UAE’s Masdar for 2 GW of wind and solar projects and 500 MWh of BESS capacity and with Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power to develop green hydrogen projects in the country.
