UAE's Energy Strategy aims to triple its renewable capacity to 14 GW by 2030

The Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has released the updated version of the UAE Energy Strategy 2050. By 2030, the country aims to achieve a grid emission factor of 0.27 kgCO2/kWh. This will contribute to reaching net zero emissions by 2050, including in the energy and desalinisation sectors. Additionally, the strategy aims to significantly increase the share of renewable energy, more than tripling it by 2030 (it targets a renewable capacity of 14.2 GW by 2030), to align with climate change mitigation goals. The target is to have clean energy account for 30% of the total energy mix by 2030. The UAE plans to invest AED 150-200bn (US$41-54bn) by 2030 to meet energy demand and sustain economic growth. The strategy focuses on enhancing energy efficiency, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and promote environmental sustainability.

In addition, the UAE also launched the development of a National Hydrogen Strategy, whixh is expected to play a crucial role in reducing emissions in hard-to-abate sectors such as heavy industries, land transport, aviation, and sea freight. By 2031, it aims to achieve a 25% reduction in emissions in these sectors. The country also intends to become a leading producer of low-carbon hydrogen by 2031.
