The United Arab Emirates has broken ground on a solar+storage project in Abu Dhabi that will be capable of delivering 1 GW of continuous baseload power. Developed by Masdar and the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), the project will combine a 5.2 GW solar PV plant with a 19 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS), according to the company’s statement (Masdar press release, 23/10/2025).
Scheduled for completion in 2027, the initiative supports EWEC’s goal to increase Abu Dhabi’s solar power generation capacity to 18 GW by 2035 and to meet 60% of the Emirate’s total power demand from renewable and clean energy sources by 2035.
