Two wind projects, including a 10 GW plant, move forward in Egypt

ACWA Power has signed a memorandum of understanding to build a 10 GW wind project in Egypt with the Egyptian New and Renewable Energy Authority and the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), an affiliate of the Egyptian state-owned power utility Egyptian Electricity Holding Company (EEHC). In June 2022, EETC selected ACWA Power to build a 1.1 GW onshore wind plant in the the Gulf of Suez and Gabal al-Zayt regions.

In addition, the Egyptian construction group Orascom Construction started building a 500 MW onshore wind plant in Ras Ghareb. The company is developing the project in a consortium with ENGIE (France) and Toyota Tsusho Corporation/Eurus Energy Holdings Corporation (Japan). In November 2019, the consortium commissioned a first wind plant in Ras Ghareb with a capacity of 263 MW.

In 2021, Egypt’s onshore wind installed capacity reached 1.6 GW (+19% compared to 2020). The country targets 14% of power generated from wind in 2035 (3% in 2021) and 25% from solar (1% in 2021).
