Two solar projects with a combined capacity of 1.4 GW have reached financial close in Saudi Arabia (EDF press release, 05/11/2025). The projects are being developed by a consortium of EDF Power Solutions and SPIC Huanghe Hydropower Development, in partnership with Aramco’s subsidiary SAPCO and have secured financing by a group of leading local and international financial institutions.
The consortium will be responsible for the design, financing, construction, and long-term operation of the 1 GW Al Masa’a solar project in Hail Province, expected to start operations in the third quarter of 2027, and the 400 MW Al Henakiyah-2 prooject in Madinah Province, set to start operations in the first quarter of 2027.
Both solar power plants are part of Saudi Arabia’s National Renewable Energy Program (NREP). They contribute to the Kingdom’s strategic objective of increasing the share of renewables in the electricity generation mix to around 50% by 2030.
