Hexicon has signed a MoU with Killybegs Fishermen’s Organisation and Sinbad Marine Services to develop and build a 2 GW floating wind farm project, 50 km off Donegal’s coast, northwest Ireland. The consortium now plan to apply for a Maritime Area Consent (MAC), a state consent process introduced under the Maritime Area Planning Act of 2021 to regulate the use of Ireland’s maritime area.
The partners intend to use part of the energy generated by the project to produce green fuels such as hydrogen and ammonia, which could be used to power the fishing fleet while also contributing to energy security in the region, an initiative that will require some 6,400 t/year of hydrogen.
In addition, DP Energy and Iberdrola have released a scoping report for an environmental impact assessment report (EIAR) for the proposed 1 GW Shelmalere offshore wind project in Ireland. The EIAR will outline the potential effects that the proposed project could have on the surrounding environment.
Ireland targets 5 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030. Less than 30 MW of offshore wind capacity was operational in Ireland as of end-2021.
