Two CCS projects (at least 9 MtCO2/year) secure approval in Norway

Two carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects, which will have an initial combined storage capacity of up to 13 MtCO2/year, have been announced for development in Norway.

Norway’s Horisont Energi and Neptune Energy have signed a project agreement to develop the Errai CCS project in Norway, which will be able to store 4 to 8 MtCO2/year in the first development phase, and potentially storing more in later phases. The project includes an onshore terminal for intermediate CO2 storage, with plans to permanently store the CO2 in an offshore reservoir. CO2 injections are expected to start by 2026.

Simultaneously, the Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy has awarded another CCS license to Germany’s Wintershall Dea and the Norwegian company CapeOmega to operate the Luna license, located 120 km west of Bergen, which will have an expected capacity of 5 MtCO2/year.
