TVO's OL3 nuclear reactor in Finland reaches first criticality

Teollisuuden Voima Oyj (TVO) has started up the Olkiluoto 3 (OL3) nuclear reactor in Eurajoki (western Finland) and the 1,650 MW EPR reactor has reached first criticality. Power generation is expected to start at the end of January 2022 with a 30% power level (around 500 MW) and will increase gradually, until regular electricity production in June 2022. When operational, the reactor will account for around 14% of Finland's power generation.

The OL-3 European Pressurized Reactor (EPR) project was built by a consortium of Areva GmbH, Areva NP (now Orano) and Siemens under a fixed-price turnkey contract. Construction started in 2005 for an expected commissioning in 2009. However, the project has been hit by repeated delays, rising costs (from an initial estimate of €3.2bn to around €11bn), and court disputes, and it should be commissioned in 2022, over 12 years behind schedule.
