TVA receives construction permit for 300 MW SMR at Clinch River site (US)

The US power utility Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has received the construction permit for a BWRX-300 small modular reactor at its Clinch River site in Oak Ridge, Tennessee (US) (GE Vernova press release, 29/09/2026). According to the statement released by GE Vernova, this represents the first construction permit issued by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC) for a BWRX-300 reactor, representing a milestone for both companies and the country’s nuclear industry.

The project builds on TVA’s existing Early Site Permit for the Clinch River site and forms part of the utility’s plans to deploy advanced nuclear generation capacity. The regulatory approval follows similar progress for the technology in Canada, where Ontario Power Generation received a licence to construct a BWRX-300 unit for its Darlington New Nuclear Project in 2025.
