The US power utility Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has decided to retire its 2.5 GW Cumberland coal-fired power plant in Tennessee (one unit would be retired by the end of 2026 and the other by the end of 2028) and to replace it with a new 1,450 MW CCGT power plant that could enter construction in 2023 and be commissioned as of 2026.
TVA announced plans to retire the plant in 2019; the company was hesitating between replacing the coal power plant with a CCGT, solar + BESS, a simple cycle gas-fired power plant or continuing to burn coal. The CCGT project is expected to reduce the site's CO2 emissions by 60%. Overall, the group aims to achieve a 57% reduction in its CO2 emissions from the 2005 level (and an 80% cut by 2035) and to add 10 GW of solar capacity by 2035. TVA's Kingston coal-fired power plant is currently undergoing an environmental review to determine the potential impacts of retirement and replacement.
