Tuscany’s government will approve a new LNG terminal in Piombino (Italy)

The regional government of Tuscany has confirmed it will endorse the construction of a new LNG terminal in the port of Piombino, Tuscany, central Italy, which will host the 5 bcm/year floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) that the Italian gas grid operator Snam purchased from Golar LNG in June 2022.

The terminal, which is expected to become operational by March 2023, is part of Italy’s previous administration’s plan to diversify gas supply and become less reliant on Russian imports.

In July 2022, Snam purchased an additional 5 bcm/year FSRU from BW LNG, which is expected to be operational at the end of 2024.

Italy imported 95% of its gas needs in 2021 (76 bcm), and in 2020, 43% of its gas imports originated from Russia.
