Turkmenistan signs agreement to supply gas to Türkiye as of March 2025

Turkmenistan's national gas company Turkmengaz has signed an agreement with the Turkish Petroleum Pipeline Corporation (BOTAS) to supply Turkmen gas to Türkiye, with first gas flows expected as soon as 1 March 2025. This new agreement builds on a March 2024 agreement on future hydrocarbon collaboration between the two countries. The volume of gas to be supplied is not specified, but Türkiye could import up to 2 bcm/year from Turkmenistan through Iran's existing gas network.

Türkiye currently imports 50 bcm of gas to meet its domestic consumption (2023). Gas imports mainly come from 5 countries: Russia ranks first (39%), followed by Iran (18%), Azerbaijan (16%), the United States (10%, LNG) and Algeria (10%, LNG) (2022). Meanwhile, Turkmenistan exports most of its gas production (72 bcm out of 94 bcm in 2023); in 2022, gas exports went mainly to China (77%), followed by Russia (16%) and Uzbekistan (7%).
