Turkmenistan raised its gas production by 6.9% and exports by 13% in 2023

According to Turkmenistan’s State Committee on Statistics, the country increased its natural gas production by 6.9% in 2023, while gas exports grew by 12.6%. Most of the gas produced was exported to China (about 50%). Russia, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan were also among importers of Turkmen natural gas in 2023.

Turkmenistan  has substantial gas reserves (13,950 bcm at the end of 2022) and is one of the world’s largest producers of natural gas, with nearly 89 bcm produced in 2022. Turkmenistan is also China’s top supplier of natural gas. In 2021, 56% of Chinese piped gas imports came from Turkmenistan (31 bcm). In 2022, the country announced its intention to more than double its natural gas exports to China to 65 bcm/year thanks to the laying of a 30 bcm/year fourth line of the China-Central Asia gas pipeline, currently under construction.
