Türkiye has released its updated nationally determined contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement, in which the country increases its unconditional greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction target to 41% by 2030, relative to a business-as-usual (BAU) scenario considering 2012 as the reference year. In its previous NDC (also INDC), Türkiye’s GHG emissions reduction target was 21% by 2030.
This new objective equals emissions reaching 695 MtCO2eq in 2030, instead of the 1,175 MtCO2eq expected in 2030 under the BAU scenario (for comparison, emissions reached 467 MtCO2eq in 2020). All those figures include land-use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF). Türkiye's updated first NDC is economy-wide and includes both mitigation and adaptation actions as well as consideration of means of implementation. The scope of the updated NDC includes Carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs), sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) and nitrogen trifluoride (NF3).
Türkiye intends to peak its emissions at the latest in the year 2038 and achieve net zero emissions by 2053.
