Türkiye unveils roadmap to reach 120 GW of wind and solar capacity by 2035

Türkiye’s Ministry of Energy has unveiled its 2035 roadmap for renewable energy, in which the country plans to quadruple its wind and solar capacity to reach 120 GW by 2035. In order to add over 90 GW to the existing capacity, Türkiye plans to install 7.5-8 GW of renewable energy capacity each year, which is expected to require an investment of US$80bn. At least 2 GW of wind capacity should be added each year through YEKA auctions (including 1.2 GW of wind and 800 MW of solar in the YEKA 2024 auction) and 5 GW of offshore wind should be developed.

Along with the added capacity, Türkiye plans to upgrade its transmission grid and infrastructures to reach 40 GW of HVDC transmission capacity (14,700 km of HVDC lines and 40 HVDC converters), which will require another US$28bn, bringing the total investment of the planned roadmap to US$108bn.

As of end 2023, wind and solar represented 22% of Türkiye’s installed capacity with about 23 GW and 17% of the power mix. According to the country’s National Energy Plan 2022-2035, renewables are expected to account for 75% of the new power capacity that will be commissioned and will make up 65% of total capacity in 2035 (58.5% in 2023, thanks to an additional 32 GW of hydro capacity).
