Türkiye targets 70% renewables by 2040 and carbon neutrality by 2053

The Turkish Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources has announced a target of meeting about 70% of Türkiye’s energy needs from renewable sources by 2040 (Turkish government press release, 20/10/2026). Türkiye also targets a carbon-neutral economy by 2053 and aims to invest USD20bn in energy efficiency between 2024 and 2030.

Solar, wind, hydropower and geothermal resources are to be developed, although no installed capacity or capacity targets by technology were given.

In the Black Sea, natural gas production is expected to double from 2027 and quadruple by 2028. The Osman Gazi floating production platform has been sent to its station in the Sakarya Gas Field, about 170 km offshore, for a 20-year period, to process offshore gas and send it onshore. At the Gabar oil field in Şırnak, more than 200 wells have been drilled. Output is about 85 kb/d (about 31 mb/year), with a goal of more than 100 kb/d (about 36 mb/year) in 2027 if new discoveries are developed.

Final tests are under way on the first reactor of the 4.8 GW Akkuyu nuclear power plant, with first electricity expected in the next few months. The remaining three reactors are scheduled to be commissioned successively in 2026, 2027 and 2028 (KEI, 07/10/2026).
