Türkiye starts productions from the Sakarya offshore gas field

The state-owned Turkish oil company Turkish Petroleum (TPAO) has announced the beginning of natural gas production from the Sakarya offshore field in the Black Sea, around 175 km offshore Karadeniz Ereğli. Production will start at 10 mcm/d (3.7 bcm/year), with an expected rise to 40 mcm/d (14.6 bcm/year) by 2028. Gas will be delivered to land via a 165 km-long subsea pipeline to a processing plant in Filyos. The field is estimated to hold 710 bcm of recoverable reserves. TPAO is the sole owner of the project, which was developed in partnership with Schlumberger and Subsea 7.

In 2021, Türkiye consumed 59.5 bcm of natural gas (compared to 48.2 bcm in 2020), of which 58.7 bcm were imported, most notably Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran.
