Türkiye has received its first-ever floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessel, which docked in the Çanakkale province. The FPSO will double gas production from the country’s Sakarya deepwater gas field located in the Black Sea. The FPSO, which was acquired from BW Offshore in 2023 and left Singapore for Türkiye in July 2024, will be operational by 2026. It will be deployed in the Black Sea for 20 years.
The Sakarya gas field, discovered in 2020, has reserves estimated at 710 bcm. The field is currently producing 6 mcm/d (2.19 bcm/year) of gas. The output is expected to increase to 10 mcm/d (3.65 bcm/year) by the first quarter of 2025, and production will double to 20 mcm/d (7.3 bcm/year) with the activation of the FPSO.
Türkiye meets almost all of its gas consumption needs with imports (98% in 2023), hence the need to develop production at home. The country imported over 50 bcm of gas in 2023, for a consumption of 51.5 bcm.
