The COP31 Presidency, led Türkiye’s Minister of Environment has proposed a voluntary global target for electricity to reach 35% of the world’s final energy consumption by 2035, up from approximately 20% today (UNFCCC external statement, 11/06/2026). Under the framework of the upcoming COP31 summit, Türkiye is proposing a global coalition of countries to drive the transition of transport, heavy industries, and home heating from fossil fuels to clean technologies, such as electric vehicles, industrial furnaces and heat pumps.
The COP31 Presidency also introduced a new global target under its Resilient Cities priority: reducing energy consumption intensity in the building sector by at least 25% by 2035.
