The Turkish Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources and the World Bank Group have launched an offshore wind roadmap for Türkiye, which outlines the development of up to 7 GW of offshore wind capacity to be installed by 2040. The Turkish Government has also set a target of reaching 5 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2035.
The roadmap also states Türkiye’s waters have areas with a total technical potential offshore wind resource estimated at 75 GW, and that most areas with good offshore wind resources are suited to floating foundations solutions.
To achieve the 7 GW by 2040 objective, the roadmap highlights 21 recommended actions for the Turkish government to consider, including setting the country’s vision beyond 2035 as part of long-term energy system planning and implementing regulatory and policy frameworks which de-risk projects.
As of end-2023, Türkiye did not yet have any installed offshore wind capacity (but had nearly 12 GW of installed onshore wind).
