Türkiye's Nuclear Regulatory Agency (NDK) has issued a permit to Akkuyu Nuclear JSC, a subsidiary of the Russian state-owned group Rosatom, to commission the 1.2 GW first unit of the 4.8 GW Akkuyu nuclear power plant, located in the Gülnar district of Türkiye’s southern region of Mersin. The permit allows to proceed to the start-up, set-up and operation processes of the reactor. Construction of Unit 1 was completed by Rosatom in early September 2023.
Russia and Türkiye signed an intergovernmental agreement in 2010 to build the nuclear plant; as such, Akkuyu will feature four Russian-designed VVER generation 3+ reactors, with 1.2 GW capacity each. Production of the first power from the unit was originally set for 2025, however, the Turkish government is planning to bring that date forward.
The foundation of the first reactor was laid in April 2018, while the construction of the second, third and fourth units started in June 2020, March 2021 and June 2022, respectively. The three remaining units are due to start operation by the end of 2026, at a rate of one per year, to ultimately reach the total installed capacity of 4.8 GW in 2028.
