Türkiye extends by a year Russian gas import contracts (22 bcm/year)

The Turkish energy group BOTAŞ has extended 22 bcm/year of contracts with Gazprom covering the purchase of Russian natural gas, which were due to expire at the end of 2025, for another year, the Turkish Ministry of Energy said (Hürriyet, 04/12/2025). BOTAŞ has a long-term with Gazprom for 16 bcm/year through the Blue Stream pipeline and has also been importing under shorter-term deals 6 bcm/year of Russian gas through the TurkStream pipeline. Both agreements were due to expire by end-2025. Türkiye is connected to Russia via two gas pipelines: Blue Stream (16 bcm/year) since 2003 and TurkStream (16 bcm/year) since 2020.

The country is also looking forward to imports more LNG from the United States and may invest in the US energy sector, according to the ministry. BOTAŞ has recently announced the signature of two LNG import contracts: one with the German state-controlled gas company SEFE (formerly Gazprom Germania) for 0.5 Mt/year of LNG over 10 years starting from 2028 (SEFE press release, 03/12/2025) and a second with Italy's energy group Eni for 0.4 Mt/year over 10 years also starting from 2028.

In 2024, Türkiye imported 52 bcm of natural gas, including 40 bcm of pipe gas and 12 bcm of LNG, according to Enerdata’s Global Energy Research. Around 55% of pipe imports are coming from Russia, followed by Azerbaidjan and Iran, while most LNG is supplied by Algeria (44%) and the United States (43%). Imports covers almost entirely domestic consumption, as production is limited (2 bcm in 2024). Gas accounts for 26% of Türkiye’s primary energy mix, and is mostly consumed by residential, service and agriculture (46% in 2024, compared to 30% in 2015), followed by power plants (25%) and industry (24%; including non-energy uses).
