Türkiye and Azerbaijan have agreed to sign a new natural gas supply deal totalling 33 bcm, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2029 and continue for 15 years, the Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources announced (Anadolu Agency, 05/01/2026). Under the agreement, Türkiye is expected to receive 2.25 bcm/year from the Absheron offshore field in Azerbaijan, delivered via pipeline across the Caspian Sea.
The Absheron field is operated by TotalEnergies, with Azerbaijan’s state oil and gas company SOCAR and the United Arab Emirates’ ADNOC as project partners. The first phase of the field has been producing around 1.5 bcm/year. TotalEnergies and its partners are working on the second development phase, which could double gas production to 3 bcm/year, with potential rise to 6 bcm/year at a later stage. The new agreement between Azerbaijan and Türkiye may also support a final investment decision for the second phase of the project (Upstream Online, 05/01/2026).
