Turkish nuclear regulator approves Akkuyu project's design parameters

The nuclear regulatory agency of Turkey, the Turkish Atomic Energy Authority (TAEK), has approved the design parameters of the Akkuyu nuclear project, that is being built by Russian nuclear group Rosatom in the Mersin Province in the south of Turkey. Approval of the parameters of the Akkuyu nuclear project’ site is a compulsory prerequisite for review of the application documentation by TAEK’s departments in order to get a construction license for the Akkuyu project.

The Akkuyu nuclear project is developed by RosEnergoAtom (93%), Inter RAO UES (3.5%) and Atomstroyexport (3.5%). Total investment is estimated at US$20bn. Commissioning, initially expected in 2020, has been delayed to late 2023. The construction was suspended in late 2015, as a result of the degradation of relations between Russia and Turkey, after Turkey downed a Russian jet. Negotiations resumed in August 2016 and Turkey and Russia are now seeking to accelerate the project. When commissioned, Akkuyu will generate enough power to meet 28% of the current power demand in Turkey.
