Turkey's power consumption increased by 7.7% in 2021

According to the Turkish energy regulator, the installed power generating capacity in Turkey grew by 4% (+3.9 GW) to 99.8 GW, thanks to renewable capacity additions (+1.9 GW of wind, +1.1 GW of solar and +529 MW of biomass). Power generation increased by 8.5% in 2021 to 331.5 TWh. Gas accounted for nearly 33% of the power mix, up from 23% in 2020, as gas-fired generation surged by 56% to offset a 29% fall in hydropower generation. Lignite-fired generation rose by 14%, while imported coal-fired generation dipped by 12%. Where renewables are concerned, wind power generation soared by 25%, biomass generation by 39% and solar generation by 17%. Imports rose by 23% to 2.3 TWh and exports by 69% to 4.2 TWh. Overall, electricity consumption rose by 7.7% to 328 TWh.
