According to Turkish Electricity Transmission Corporation (TEIAS), power generation in Turkey decreased by 0.9% in 2019, while electricity consumption declined by 0.6%. Electricity imports fell by more than 10%, while exports contracted by 9.3%. At the end of November 2019, the installed capacity exceeded 91 GW (up from 88.5 GW at the end of 2018). Renewable energy sources are gaining momentum: they covered 46% of the power mix during the first 10 months of 2019 (up to 64% including local energy sources) and wind power generation even reached 19% of the power mix on 15 September 2019.
Where gas is concerned, total gas inflows to the Turkish gas network declined by 6.3% in 2019 to nearly 47 bcm, according to the Turkish Petroleum Pipeline Corporation (BOTAŞ). The Turkish gas network stretches over 162,000 km, covering 81% of the population and reaching a transmission capacity of 318 mcm/d (116 bcm/year). In addition, the total gas storage capacity reached 3.44 bcm in 2019. Turkey imported around 35.5 bcm of piped gas between January and October 2019, plus more than 10 bcm of LNG.
