Turkey will start first unit of 1.2 GW Ilisu hydropower plant in May 2020

The General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works (DSI) plans to start generating power at the 1.2 GW Ilisu hydropower plant in southeast Turkey in May 2020, when the first 200 MW unit is scheduled to be commissioned. The dam is due to be fully operational by the end of 2020. Reservoir levels have already reached nearly twice the minimum threshold required to launch commercial operations.

Three other dam projects are expected to be fully operational by 2021, namely the 454 MW Asagi Kalekoy (Lower Kalekoy) hydropower plant, the 350 MW Cetin hydropower plan and the 558 MW Yusufeli hydropower plant. Earlier in April 2020, KAF Teknik Yapı awarded a US$1.5bn (€1.4bn) contract to China Nengge Gezhouba International to build a 1,000 MW hydropower project in the Isparta region in western Turkey. The pumped-storage project will include four 250 MW units. The scope of the contract includes design, supply, construction, installation, commissioning and trial operation. Construction is expected to last 75 months (commissioning as of mid-2026).
