Turkey will raise gas prices by 47% for power plants and 48% for industry

The Turkish state-owned energy group Botas has raised natural gas price by 47% for power plants and by 48% for the industry, due to surging global gas prices. Prices for households will remain at the same level. It had already raised gas prices for industry and power plants by 15% on 1 October 2021.

In 2020, the industrial gas price decreased to €2.09c/kWh, dropping lower than the residential price, which decreased only slightly (€2.31c/kWh). In 2019, gas prices had increased both for industry and households by 30% and 10%, respectively, following successive price hikes implemented by EMRA.

Gas consumption is expected to reach 60 bcm in 2020, due to adverse hydrological conditions that have lowered hydropower generation in the first 8 months of the year. In 2020, the share of natural gas in the country's power mix increased to 23%, after a record low of 19% in 2019: gas consumption partly rebounded to 48 bcm in 2020 after two years of decrease (successive gas price hikes and lower need for power generation). Power generation represented 28% of Turkey's gas consumption in 2020, down from 55% in 2010, followed by industry (26% share).
