Turkey targets 10 bcm of gas storage capacity by 2023

Turkey aims to increase the underground natural gas storage capacity of the Silivri and Lake Tuz (Tuz Gölü) facilities to 10 bcm. The facilities are operated by Turkey's state-owned energy gas group BOTAŞ. Gas storage capacity at Lake Tuz will increase from 1.2 bcm to 5.4 bcm in 2023, while that at Silivri will be raised from 2.8 bcm to 4.6 bcm in late 2022, enabling Turkey to store nearly 20% of its gas consumption. In addition, a new 7.3 bcm/year floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) including storage tanks should be commissioned in 2022 in the Saros Bay in northwestern Turkey.

In 2020, Turkey consumed over 48 bcm of natural gas, which were mostly supplied by imports (around 48 bcm) as production is low (0.4 bcm).
