Turkey signs a 10-year purchase deal with Oman for 1.4 bcm/year of LNG

Turkey’s state-owned energy company Botas has signed a 10-year purchase agreement with Oman for the supply of 1.4 bcm/year of LNG. According to the Turkish Ministry of Energy, the agreement could be further extended if the conditions are favourable.

Amidst gas supply difficulties due to the war in Ukraine, Turkey is trying to position itself as a new gas trade hub between the Middle East, Russia and Europe. In early January 2023, the Bulgarian state-owned gas company Bulgargaz entered into an agreement with Botas to import up to 1.5 bcm/year of LNG via Turkey’s gas network and LNG imports terminal for a period of 13 years (until 2035).

In 2021, Turkey produced just under 400 mcm of natural gas but consumed nearly 60 bcm. The country imported nearly 59 bcm of natural gas and exported 326 mcm. That year, Oman produced nearly 44 bcm of gas and exported about 14 bcm.
