Turkey plans to save US$30bn by 2033 with new energy efficiency scheme

The Turkish government has unveiled a new national energy efficiency action plan and expects to save around US$30.2bn by 2033. The programme will be implemented with the help of the Renewable Energy Resource Areas (YEKA) scheme. The programme aims at reducing the country's primary energy consumption by 14.6% and CO2 emissions by 66.6%.

Around 30% of the existing street lightning infrastructure (7.5 million street lights) will be replaced with energy efficient options (LED) by 2023, resulting in annual savings of US$45m. Besides, 1.7 million homes will be made energy efficient by 2023, saving US$1bn: the action plan estimates that the thermal insulation of buildings may save up to 40% on heating bills in the industrial and residential sectors. The Credit Guarantee Fund will provide a support of up to TRY10bn (US$2.5bn) to the industrial sector, to ensure a 3- to 4-year return period of the productivity investments. Finally, approximately US$10.9bn will be invested by 2023 to develop renewable energies.
