Turkey plans to build 169 km of pipeline at Sakarya gas field

Turkey plans to build 169 km of seabed gas pipelines to connect the Sakarya gas field in the Black Sea to the mainland. In August 2020, Turkish Petroleum discovered a field with 320 bcm of natural gas in Tuna-1 zone, where the national state-owned oil company has been carrying exploration activities. In October 2020, it discovered an additional 85 bcm of natural gas in this zone, raising total amount of natural gas reserves in the field - renamed Sakarya - to 405 bcm. Moreover, the company discovered another 135 bcm of natural gas reserves in the Amasra-1 borehole in the Sakarya gas field in June 2021, raising total discoveries to 540 bcm. The Sakarya field is expected to enter production in 2023 with an average production of 5-10 bcm/year, with production ramping up until 2025, when it should reach a plateau output of 15 bcm/year; sustained plateau production should start in 2027 or 2028.

In 2020, Turkey consumed over 48 bcm of natural gas, which were mostly supplied by imports (around 48 bcm) as production is low (0.4 bcm).
