Turkey expands the Silivri gas storage facility’s capacity to 4.6 bcm

Turkey has officially increased the capacity of its Silivri underground natural gas storage facility from 3.2 bcm to 4.6 bcm. The site’s daily withdrawal capacity of 28 million cubic meters (mcm) has been ramped up to 75 mcm. The country is also currently increasing capacity at Turkey’s second storage unit, Tüz Gölü (Lake Tuz), in central Aksaray province, which can store 1.2 bcm of gas.

Gas consumption surged to 60 bcm in 2021, 24% higher than its 2020 level, driven by a high economic growth and a limited hydropower availability. Most of the gas supply comes from imports, which increased by 23% in 2021 to 59 bcm. Gas imports mainly come from 4 countries: Russia ranks first with 33%, followed by Azerbaijan with 24%, Algeria (12%, LNG), and Iran (11%) (2020).
