Turkey commissions a new 500 MW hydropower plant

GE Renewable Energy has completed the 500 MW Lower Kaleköy hydropower plant on the Murat River in the Genç district of Bingöl province, in eastern Turkey and connected the last turbine to the Turkish grid, enabling the power plant to go into full commercial operation. The hydropower is owned and operated by a 50-50 joint venture between Turkish construction companies Cengiz Construction and Özaltın Construction. GE Hydro Solutions has provided three 3 x 155 MW Francis turbines and related equipment for the project.

Hydropower accounts for 31% of Turkey’s installed capacity, with 28.5 GW, and covered 29% of the power mix in 2019. In December 2020, the 1,200 MW Ilisu hydropower plant on the Tigris river in south-eastern Turkey reached full capacity. The TRY18bn (US$2.4bn) project was approved by the Turkish authorities in 1997, an suffered several setbacks and delays.
