Turkey and Azerbaijan start building TANAP gas interconnection

Turkey and Azerbaijan have broken ground for the Trans-Anatolian Gas Pipeline (TANAP) project, which will deliver natural gas produced in the Shah Deniz field in Azerbaijan to Turkey and Europe. The pipeline will stretch over 1,805 km, starting at the Georgia-Turkey border and ending up in the Edirne province (border of Greece and Bulgaria). It will be commissioned in stages, with first gas by July 2019: it will have a capacity of 16 bcm/year (of which 10 bcm directed to European countries) by 2019-2021, to be raised to 24 bcm/year (of which 18 bcm/year for Europe) by 2022-2025 and eventually to 31 bcm/year (25 bcm/year for Europe) after 2026. TANAP is the first phase of the US$45bn Southern Gas Corridor.
