Tunisia's power generation declined by 3% in 2022

Tunisia's electricity production declined by 3% in 2022, with natural gas accounting for 95% of the total and wind for 2% (24% fall in wind power generation in 2022), according to preliminary data from the country's Ministry of Energy and Mines. The state-owned company Tunisian Company of Electricity and Gas (STEG) represented nearly 96% of the total generation (compared to 84% in 2021), with an 11% increase in output thanks to a 12% growth in gas-fired power generation. Generation from independent power producers (IPPs) was divided by 4 in 2022 to 0.7 TWh (4% of total power production), as the Rades IPP power plant suspended operations as of June 2022 and was integrated into STEG. In a context of a large rise in imports from Algeria (x2.4), electricity sales rose by 5%.

In addition, Tunisia's oil and NGL output fell by 14% in 2022, while the country's natural gas production declined by 2%. The demand for oil products increased by 0.4%, while gas consumption decreased by 4% (lower gas availability limiting the demand from the power sector). Consequently, Tunisia's primary energy deficit increased by 4% to 4.8 Mtoe in 2022, even when taking into account the royalty for the transit of Algerian gas, which is paid in kind. The country's energy independence rate reached 50% in 2022 (including the royalty), compared to 53% in 2021.
