Tunisia's electricity production increased by 2% in 2021

Tunisia's electricity production increased by 2% in 2021 to 20.1 TWh, with natural gas accounting for 98% of the total and wind for 2%, according to preliminary data from the country's Ministry of Energy and Mines. The state-owned company Tunisian Company of Electricity and Gas (STEG) represented 84% of the total generation. Electricity sales increased by 7% to 16.4 TWh. In addition, Tunisia's oil output increased by a quarter in 2021 to 1.9 Mtoe. The country also produced 19% more natural gas in 2021, with an output of 2.2 Mtoe. The demand for oil products increased by 8% to 4.6 Mt and gas consumption by 5% to 5.1 Mtoe. Consequently, Tunisia's primary energy balance remains in deficit, with -4.6 Mtoe in 2021, even when taking into account the royalty for the transit of Algerian gas, which is paid in kind. The country's energy independence rate reached 52% in 2021 (including the royalty), compared to 43% in 2020.
