Tunisia aims to raise the share of renewable energy in its power mix to 16% by 2027, supported by plans to develop approximately 1.6 GW of renewable capacity, according to the country’s 2027 Finance Bill. Of this total, around 1.1 GW will be opened to international investors through concession and licensing schemes, while the remaining 500 MW will be dedicated to self-generation projects.
Under the concession scheme, Tunisia expects a 198 MW renewable energy project at Khnabna and a 77 MW wind park to become operational. Construction is also scheduled to begin on a 300 MW solar power plant in Bazma, in the southern governorate of Kebili, which will be equipped with battery storage.
According to our data, renewables accounted for 5% of Tunisia’s electricity mix in 2025, comprising 4% solar and 1% wind. Natural gas remained the dominant source, representing 94% of the mix. Under its energy strategy, Tunisia aims to increase the share of renewables to 35% by 2030 and 50% by 2035.
Tunisia remained a net electricity exporter until 2021, when it became a net importer. In 2025, electricity imports fell by 21% to 2.2 TWh, mainly sourced from Algeria, while exports remained limited at 0.1 TWh (Enerdata Global Energy Research).
