Transmission Company of Nigeria expands network capacity to 7 GW

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced that its transmission network was able to handle 7,000 MW of electricity, following massive expansion works (the transmission network initially had a 5,000 MW capacity). This transmission capacity remains higher than the current available generation capacity (3,600 MW), and even higher than the national target of 5,000 MW of available capacity. In 2012, Manitoba Hydro International (Canada) was named as the manager of TCN for three years.

During 2013, some power plants were shut for maintenance following series of default affecting their units for hydropower plants, such as the 760 MW Kainji plant or the 600 MW Shiroro plant, while gas constraints led to shut downs at the 507 MW Sapele and 500 MW Olorunsogo plants. Technical problems led to put 1,131 MW Alaoji power plant under maintenance, while 150 MW at the Omoku power plant were offline due to problems on the transmission grid.
