TransCanada's Grand Rapids oil pipeline project approved (Canada)

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) in Canada has approved TransCanada's applications to build and operate the Grand Rapids Pipeline Project (Grand Rapids). The oil pipeline project will stretch from the producing area northwest of Fort McMurray (Alberta) to terminals in the Edmonton/Heartland region. It is expected to have a transport capacity of up to 900,000 bbl/d of crude oil and 330,000 bbl/d of diluent. Construction is expected to start before the end of the year 2014 and the pipeline will be commissioned in phases, with first oil delivered by mid-2016. The project is developed on a 50-50 basis by TransCanada and Brion Energy (former Phoenix Energy). Total investment is estimated at C$3bn (US$2.7bn).
