Total's Fort Hills oil sand project comes onstream (Canada)

The Canadian Fort Hills oil sands project located north of Fort McMurray in Alberta (Canada) has achieved first oil and the production is expected to ramp up until reaching a plateau of 180,000 bbl/d. The asset is operated by the oil and gas company Suncor (53.06% stake) while Total and Teck hold respectively 26.05% and 20.89% of the project. Total gradually reduced its stake from 39.2% in 2015 to 26.05% as of today. The company plans to reduce it to 25%, once the project's total cost is known.

Total has been present in the Canadian upstream since 1999. The group also holds a 50% stake in the Surmont project, whose second phase started in September 2015. Its gross production capacity has reached 150,000 bbl/d. The Canadian heavy oil sands production is expected to increase in the years to come and could reach 3.7 mb/d in 2030 (75% of the forecast oil production) and 4.3 mb/d in 2050.
