TotalEnergies will develop a 1 GW wind project in Kazakhstan

Total Eren, a subsidiary of the French energy group TotalEnergies, has signed an agreement with the Kazakh companies Samruk-Kazyna and KazMunayGas (KMG) to develop the 1 GW Mirny onshore wind project, located in the Khantau district of southern Kazakhstan. The project, which will comprise 200 wind turbines and will be combined with a 600 MWh battery storage system, will be Kazakhstan largest wind project and is expected to supply electricity to more than 1 million people in the country. TotalEnergies already has two solar power plants in operation in Kazakhstan with a total capacity of 128 MW.

Simultaneously, as part of its energy transition strategy in Kazakhstan, TotalEnergies has signed an agreement for the sale of its affiliate Total E&P Dunga to the Kazakh company Oriental Sunrise Corporation for US$330m. Total E&P Dunga holds a 60% operating interest in the onshore Dunga oil field in Kazakhstan, representing a net production of approximately 7,400 boe/day in 2022.

At the end of 2021, wind power represented 4% of Kazakhstan’s installed capacity with 1.2 GW. The country targets 15% of renewables in its power mix by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060.
