TotalEnergies takes FID on 1 GW wind + 600 MWh BESS project in Kazakhstan

TotalEnergies has approved the Final Investment Decision (FID) and secured financing for the Mirny onshore wind and BESS project in Kazakhstan (TotalEnergies press release, 24/04/2026).

The USD1.2bn Mirny project comprises a 1 GW onshore wind park combined with a 600 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) supplied by Saft, a wholly owned affiliate of TotalEnergies, to ensure a reliable power supply to the national grid. TotalEnergies holds a 60% stake in Mirny, jointly with partners Samruk Energy and KazMunayGas, each holding 20%.

Located in the southeast of the country, Mirny is expected to generate 100 TWh of renewable electricity over 25 years. The power produced will be sold to the Government under a 25‑year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) signed in 2023

TotalEnergies and Masdar have recently signed a binding agreement to create a 50/50 joint venture by merging their onshore renewable activities in nine countries across Asia, including Kazakhstan. The joint venture is expected to develop, build, own, and operate the onshore solar, wind, and BESS projects of both companies. The JV is projected to include a portfolio of 3 GW of operational assets and 6 GW of assets in advanced development, all expected to enter commercial operation by 2030 (KEI, 03/04/2026).

Kazakhstan aims to increase its wind capacity, as in early April 2026 the construction of a 1 GW wind power plant began in the Pavlodar region of Kazakhstan. The project is being developed by China’s State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) in partnership with Samruk‑Energy, Kazakhstan’s power utility. The wind project, scheduled for commissioning in 2029, also includes a 300 MW/600 MWh BESS (KEI, 02/04/2026).

Kazakhstan targets a share of 15% renewables in the power mix by 2030 and 50% renewables and alternative energy by 2050. At the end of 2024, the country had 1.8 GW of installed wind capacity, representing 6% of total installed capacity, according to our data.
