TotalEnergies starts production at 10 mcm/d gas field in Argentina

The French oil and gas company TotalEnergies has announced the start of production from the 10 mcm/d Fenix gas field, located 60 km off the coast of Tierra del Fuego in southern Argentina. The Fenix field (TotalEnergies 37.5%, Harbour Energy 37.5%, and Pan American Energy 25%) is part of the Cuenca Marina Austral 1 (CMA-1) concession, with a carbon intensity of 9 kg CO2e/boe. The gas production should be sent through a 35 km subsea pipeline to the Véga Pléyade platform to be treated onshore at the Río Cullen and Cañadon Alfa facilities.

TotalEnergies has been operating in Argentina since 1978 and, through its Total Austral affiliate, is the country’s leading international gas producer, operating 25% of the Argentina’s production.

At the end of 2023, Argentina produced about 42 bcm of natural gas and it is also considered as the third country in South America with the largest natural gas reserves  (392 bcm), only after Venezuela and Brazil.
