The French company TotalEnergies has started commercial operations on two large-scale solar parks with integrated battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the US State of Texas, totalling a capacity of 1.2 GW.
The two projects, Danish Fields and Cottonwood, are TotalEnergies largest solar + BESS projects in the US. The Danish Fields project has a capacity of 720 MW over 1.4 million ground-mounted PV panels and features a 225 MWh BESS. 70% of the solar capacity has been contracted through long-term Corporate Power Purchase Agreements (CPPAs) signed with industry players, while the remaining 30% will support the decarbonization of TotalEnergies’ industrial plants in the U.S. Gulf Coast region. The Cottonwood project has a solar capacity of 455 MW featuring over 847,000 ground-mounted PV panels and also features a 225 MWh BESS. Its power generation is contracted under long-term PPAs indexed to merchant prices through an upside-sharing mechanism with LyondellBasell and Saint-Gobain.
As of end-2023, solar represented over 10% of the US’ installed capacity with 138 GW and 5% of the country’s power generation with 219 TWh. The US’ solar capacity has grown at a fast pace since 2010 (2.6 GW), accelerating since 2016 (35 GW).
